The Darkover Purity Test. Clearly, my Darkover knowledge has declined significantly over the fifteen years or so since I first read most of the books; I score a mere 25% these days.

But at least I can still check off "Have you ever written a play, story, or poem about Darkover?" And yes, on some level I do occasionally still wonder about the exercise of laran gifts during thunderstorms. :-)

So, New Line Cinema is hosting a Lord of the Rings themed creative writing contest for middle school and high school students. Sounds good, until one gets to the contest itself:
The children will be asked to write a 200-word essay on the theme of Gandalf's quote from The Lord of the Rings: "All you have to do is decide what to do with the time that is given to you."
Is it just me, or are there hundreds of more interesting contests that could have been devised? This strikes me as just one more boring school essay, for all that I would have used it as an excuse to wax eloquent on matters I didn't really understand when I was in high school myself.
