More on donating books
I have info on several places taking book and book-related donations now:

ETA: I've just heard from someone in Baton Rouge that they are indeed collecting books there; see below for details.

=================================

[info]rachelmanija spoke with someone in Baton Rogue who is going to personally drive books to Baton Rouge shelters. She will take anything: adult books, kid books, magazines, new, used, etc. For details of where to mail them email toni.causey@gmail.com.

ETA: Just received this update:

I'm working with Toni Causey via the internet to spread the word about young adult and children's books. We can take anything you have and have also set up two wishlists at amazon, one for books and one for games.

Here's the mailing address for YA books, all ages comics and children's books:

Josh Causey
Parkview Baptist Church
11795 Jefferson Highway
Baton Rouge, LA 70816

These books will go to Southern University and other area shelters and be delivered direct by the folks at Parkview. I think part of the problem with other places is logistics, and we have that situation well in hand. If you want to buy off the wishlists (games would be great!) send me an email:

moroaircraft@verizon.net

Thanks!

From SCBWI Houston: Due to overwhelming response, the SCBWI-Houston book drive will be put on hold for now. Thanks to all of you who donated books.

Thanks for this info (my local SCBWI chapter is not very on the ball). Now I have a project when I babysit my sister's kids tomorrow night.

I did warn you.

So says person kicking herself for sending the link to the initial post, rather than the link to the livejournal in general.

So you may want to edit the original entry and move this down, assuming traffic is coming there, not here.

(My bad, of course, was not realizing they were focused on kids books right away!)

Do you have an address I can email Neil's blog at?

The Houston SCBWI folks have asked me to try to get the info removed, as they really can't handle anymore donations--I figure I can send an update and a link to the longer list.

Sorry!

Re: books for kids
Do you know if any of these book drives are still on? I'll gladly link to your page, but don't want to make things harder for these folks if it's outdated.

Re: books for kids
I just received an update about the Baton Rogue one about a week ago, so I know they're accepting books; they say they're able to handle the logistics.

I've deleted all the other book donation links. (SCBWI was the last one left, but I've just confirmed they were indeed overwhelmed as well.)

The other charities remaining on the list are now all taking monetary donations for book-related causes, rather than actual books, and since cash donations don't have the same logistical problems, that info should still be current, too.

IOW, what's left here ought to be current--thanks! :-)
